Should investors be optimistic about the real estate market in 2022?

By Greg Bell

As we move well into 2022, some investors are still acting with caution in regards to real estate additions to their portfolios. No one could have predicted the turn that Australian real estate would have taken in the past two years, and many still have questions about its stability. However, investors have several reasons to remain optimistic about the real estate and housing markets this year. Let's take a look at some of the most valuable tell-tale signs regarding what the future holds.

Most investors remain positive about the future

A recent survey conducted through a collaboration between Buyer Barometer COVID Survey by the Real Estate Buyers Agents Association of Australia (REBAA) and Property Talk Australia (PTA) offers enlightened information regarding the general consensus on the issue. The report found that the uncertainty of the past few years has not impacted every investor.

56% of buyers "said COVID had no influence on their purchasing strategy, and have proceeded with a purchase or are still looking for a property to buy." Through it all, the market has remained open and even been beneficial to some. The report found that some had a 21% rise in their returns from the previous year.

Looking forward

This year, no one is sure what to expect in general terms from the state of the global economy. However, trends are moving positively in the real estate investment sphere. Investors are even looking to add to their portfolios. In the current year, 49% of people were looking to invest in a second property, which was a sizable increase compared to 2022.

Here are some of the locations that are showing more interest than others:

  • Queensland.
  • New South Wales.
  • Victoria.

Queensland has some of the higher increases in investment interest, with a rise of 38% showing interest. Those who responded to the survey showed interest because they expected significant market growth and projected desirable lifestyles and affordability compared to other locations.

Despite the unknown future regarding the pandemic and other global events, Australian real estate investment is showing signs of remaining favourable.
